How Do You Say Success In Italian? Mario Battali

La Birreria
West 23 Street (near 5th Avenue)

TV shows, cookbooks, gourmet restaurants, wine shops, a mega store and now a beer garden . . . can one man contribute so much to our gastronomic pleasures with so much success? Chef, restaurateur and entrepreneur extraordinaire Mario Battali makes it seen so easy. Last fall we witnessed the opening of Eataly, an 8,000 square foot Italian food emporium of gargantuan proportions. Critics have called it “a mecca for all things Italian.” This month he added a new dimension to his empire by opening an Italian rooftop beer garden called Birreria. Situated above Eataly, the partially enclosed roof garden offers beer, wine, food and spectacular views of the Empire State Building, the Flatiron Building and Madison Square Park. The beer palace in the sky with retractable glass ceiling is accessed by elevator through the store. Open from 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 a.m. This is destined to be a popular spot this summer.

SIGHTSEEING

The High Line Phase Two

(along 10th Ave.)

The second stretch of the High Line has opened, doubling this urban paradise to a full 20 blocks. The creative team of designers and architects have infused new features that add to the diversity of this urban wonder suspended stories above ground level. Among the new features are a 4900 square foot lawn, a viewing platform where you can look out over the tree tops and lots of unique seating space. The expansion now offers food carts and, coming soon, a roller skating rink. The High Line has garnered much praise from architects who marvel at the concept, from artists who appreciate the design, which incorporates surrounding buildings and makes the immediate cityscape look like a panoramic canvas, from naturalists who appreciate the High Line’s respect for greenery and most of all from the average New Yorker who feels that there can never be enough ways to enjoy New York City. MUSEUM EXHIBITS

Metropolitan Museum of Art

1000 Fifth Avenue (@ 81st Street)

Anthony Caro on the Roof
Through October 30, 2011

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the world’s largest and grandest art museums is constantly looking for innovative ways to expand its exhibit space and enhance the viewer‘s experience. With this goal in mind, in recent years, the Met has indulged in a series of temporary installations in the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden. At the present we find an exhibit of works by British sculptor Anthony Caro. Caro who has worked in London for more than sixty years is a trained architect who later studied sculpting at the Royal Academy Schools in London. He has taught sculpting, imparting his influence on the next generation of artists. Today he is considered to be one of the leading influences in modern sculpture. In the early days of his career, he worked as an assistant to Henri Moore - a distinct honor for any young sculptor looking to learn from the best. For his extraordinary contribution to the world of art, Anthony Caro has received many awards of distinction, among them knighthood and the Medal of Merit both bestowed upon him by Queen Elizabeth. The current exhibit consists of five large works in steel, ranging in dates from 1964 to 2010. The open space of the Met’s rooftop and the New York City backdrop provide a unique viewing atmosphere for these works.

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty

Through August 7, 2011

This must see exhibit features the extraordinary career of legendary British clothing designer, Alexander McQueen. For some Alexander McQueen became a household name following the recent wedding of Prince William to Catherine Middleton. It was the couture house, which bears his name that produced the much-talked-about bridal gown that will now go down in history. However, for many who have followed his career, the bold and dramatic statements made by the highly architectural nature of his designs are unparalleled. Meticulously curated, the exhibit space has been transformed into a series of rooms whose wall and ceiling treatments enhances the look and provocative feel of the clothing. McQueen’s designs have little to do with wearable apparel and a lot to do with the gothic tales and romantic fantasies that must have filled his mind throughout the forty years of his short life. The wearability of his collection is questionable but the beyond-the-edge, evocative designs are, without question, a true statement of genius. Special effects including wall textures, music, videos and other media effects surround you and create what, at times, borders on a phantasmagorical odyssey. Come for the art . . . come for the show . . . either way, this is not to be missed.

The Jewish Museum

Collecting Matisse and Modern Masters:
The Cone Sisters of Baltimore
May- Sept. 26, 2011
www.thejewishmuseum.org

At the turn of the century, there appeared a new crop of modern artists, many of which were not yet established and others who were simply unknown. Their style of art was new and sufficiently different to cause an uproar among critics who were unwilling to embrace change. The Cone sisters, two well-to-do daughters of German jewish immigrants traveled to Europe and became enthralled by this then avant garde style. While in Paris, their path crossed with that of Gertrude Stein who introduced them to Matisse and Picasso with whom they would develop a life-long friendship.

It was about that time that Matisse had just begun establishing himself and Picasso was a total unknown. They had a keen eye for art and quickly amassed one of the largest private collections of works by these and other artists of the period, numbering nearly 3000 works in varying media. While alive, the sisters who lived in adjoining apartments displayed their collections throughout the apartments and enjoyed them to the fullest. During a trip to the States, Matisse visited the sisters in their homes and expressed his pleasure over the way his works were so boldly displayed.

In 1949, upon the death of Etta Cone, the entire collection was donated to the Baltimore Museum of Art. The collection was first installed in 1957 and is now housed in the museum’s newly expanded Cone Wing. The Cone Sisters Exhibition currently on view at the Jewish Museum gives us a rare opportunity to get a close look at a sampling of works from this grand collection. The fifty works on display represent the work of Picasso, Matisse, Gaugin, Renoir, Van Gogh, Pissarro and others. In addition to oil paintings the sisters collected sculpture, textiles and decorative art, a sampling of which can also be admired here. Run Don’t Walk!

(Admission is by timed entry only)
The World’s Largest Dinosaurs
Through January 2, 2012

The dinosaur hall of the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) has long been a fond memory for any child growing up in New York City and a fortuitous adventure for visitors who have taken the time to stop in while in town. Now, years later, the large hall has been redesigned and includes more accurate exhibits based on recent findings, which prove our original concept of what a reconstructed dinosaur skeleton might look like to be wrong. Gone is the replicated brontosaurus and in its place are amazing 3-D displays that give us a better understanding of how these giants survived life on earth for so many years.

This large as life exhibit is the culmination of 20 years of research by a team of scientist led by Mark Norell, head of the Department of Paleontology at AMNH. Curated by Mark Norell and Dr. Martin Sanders Professor of Vertebrate Paleontology at the University of Bonn, Germany, the exhibit applies new theories derived from major findings made in Mongolia’s Gobi desert, Patagonia, the Andes and China.

The exhibit focuses on the evolutionary relationship between dinosaurs and present-day birds, and the internal anatomy of these prehistoric giants that survived for so long. See life size bones, muscles and internal organs. Learn about their heartbeat and metabolism, and how they interacted with their large bodies. At the end of the exhibit join the miniature dig pit and see what dinosaur you are able to reconstruct following some of the same methods used by scientists in actual digs. There is so much adventure for kids in New York - you just need to plan a trip.
