Van Gogh and the Colors of the Night
September 21 - January 9

MoMA
11 West 53 St
(between 5th & 6th Aves)
212-708-9400

His bright colors, whimsical brush strokes and innocent depictions of people, places and things has led Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh to become one of the favorite painters of many. Through his often melancholic depictions of the houses, people and places that surrounded him, he has given us the chance to peer into his life and allowed us to develop an affinity for the, at times, troubled life that he led. The exhibit focuses on his use of and experimentation with light to render vivid depictions of night. The specific paintings chosen for this exhibit demonstrate the artist's progression in the use of varying color combinations to depict twilight and night. Starry Night is currently on loan to the Yale Museum and will return in September in time for this exhibit. Catch it while it's here because in February it travels to Amsterdam and will not return until June of 2009.

Metropolitan Museum of Art

Few large scale sculptures are intended for indoor placement yet conventional museum spaces limit us to viewing these works within confining walls and ceilings. The Cantor Rooftop at The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a rare chance to enjoy these large works in a more natural setting. Currently on exhibit are three works by contemporary American artist Jeff Koons.

This collection of 140 paintings represents the first major retrospective of the works of England's most celebrated artist mounted in over 40 years. The works represent an international collection of which nearly 50% belong to London's Tate Museum. Turner was a prolific painter whose works were first exhibited when he was a mere 15 years old. By age 18 he had established his own studio and at age 27 he was elected to the Royal Academy. Throughout his travels he studied the effects of weather on the sky and waters and aimed to depict this ever-changing spectacle of color on canvas. He quickly mastered capturing the moods produced by changing conditions.

Moore in America
May 24 - November 3

The New York Botanical Gardens
Bronx River Parkway & Fordham Road
718-817-8700

In late May twenty sculptures by British sculptor Henry Moore arrived at the New York botanical Gardens in what is the largest outdoor exhibit of his works ever mounted in America. Placed throughout the gardens' 250 acres, the sculptures will find harmony in these settings throughout the changing seasons. Moore who died in 1986 would have been pleased to see these sculptures, which he intended to be viewed in open spaces, enjoy the complementary back drop of the botanical gardens. The Gardens are accessible by car, by train and by Metro North. For detailed directions and information regarding hours of operation visit NYBG.org. If you go, bring your camera. The Gardens are sponsoring a photo contest in conjunction with this exhibit. The winner's photo will be used in an upcoming publication.

Olafur Eliasson Waterfalls
June 26 - October 13
New York Harbor & East River

In 2005 artists Christos and Jeanne-Claude captured the attention of New Yorkers with the installations of The Gates: a Project for Central Park. Now, in 2008 Danish artist Olafur Eliasson will install four waterfalls in New York Harbor and along the East River, including one under the Brooklyn bridge. The artificial waterfalls will send water cascading from heights reaching 90 to 120 feet. At a cost of $15 million (funded by private donations) the waterfalls are likely to become as controversial as The Gates. In this case, the artist's intention is to create a nature experience in an urban setting. The best views of the falls will be from South Street Seaport.

Eliasson's last major installation was "The Weather Project", a large sun made of mirrors, lamps and mist installed at London's Tate drawing more than two million viewers.

The Scoop on NYC Ice Cream

It seems that recently the coffee craze is being out done only by the ice cream/yogurt/gelato craze. For the summer at least many are trading in their warm caffeine boost for a creamy cool down treat. Brands such as Grom, Pinkberry, Red Mango and Yolato may be cropping up all over town but, for the best in NYC dairy delights, try one of these lesser known spots:

Il Laboratorio del Gelato
95 Orchard Street
Phone:(212) 343-9922
Hours:10am-6pm daily
Notes:In the midst of the lower east side shopping district

Chinatown Ice Cream Factory
65 Bayard Street
Phone:(212) 608-4170
Hours:11am - 10pm daily
Notes:Here flavors include green tea and ginger

Ronnybrook Farms
75 Ninth Avenue (15-16 Sts) - Inside the Chelsea Market complex
Phone:(212) 741-6455
Hours:Open weekday until 9pm and until 8pm on weekends
Notes:Their ice cream is made from milk produced in their eponymous dairy farm.

The Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory
Fulton Landing at Water Street
Phone:(718) 246-3963
Hours:Noon to 10pm daily
Notes:On the Brooklyn side of the bridge.

L'Arte Del Gelato
75 Ninth Avenue (15-16th Sts) In the Chelsea Market Bldg
Phone:(212) 366-0570
