THEATRE

The Best of Broadway

As Broadway transitions from one season to another we find ourselves between a series of strong shows still wooing audiences and an impressive list of new shows waiting to take their first bow. Among the heaviest hitters this season and still running strong are:

Musicals

The Drowsy Chaperone

The Marquis Theatre (212) 307-4100
Sutton Foster the talented stage star who made her mark in 2002 in Broadway's Thoroughly Modern Millie returned in 2005 to play Jo in Little Women. Each performance earned her a Tony Award nomination. Today, a sure-shot box office magnet, Sutton finds herself once again in the limelight in this season's musical hit, The Drowsy Chaperone, the story of a stereotypical starlet who gives up her stage career for marriage. Her ability to act, dance and sing plus, her charismatic personality, which is well employed in every character she plays has, once again, earned her a Tony Award nomination. For song, dance and superb light-hearted entertainment head out to The Drowsy Chaperone.

The Manhattan Club has tickets available for this and other shows.

The Color Purple

The Color Purple

The Broadway Theatre (212) 239-6200
In the mid 80s readers and television audiences were glued to the riveting and emotional saga of Alice Walker's novel, The Color Purple. The story follows the trying life of a woman who, through love, overcomes adversity. Successfully adapted for the stage, The Color Purple opened on Broadway as a large scale musical and features gospel, jazz, ragtime and blues. Its beautiful musical score, colorful costumes, collection of talented actors, direction and production team earned The Color Purple eleven Tony Award nominations.

Dramas

Sara Jones Bridge and Tunnel

Helen Hayes Theatre (212) 239-6200
In this one woman show, the very talented Sara Jones paints a multi-color canvas that depicts New York City's ethnic diversity. Each brilliantly portrayed character deals with the assimilation process as well as social and emotional issues that transcend ethnicity. The show, which began Off Broadway moved to Broadway for what was expected to be a short run. After several extensions, the show continues to play to sell out crowds and is currently scheduled to run through August 6th. A special Tony Award was established for this play and was awarded at this year's Academy Awards.

Faith Healer

Booth Theatre (212) 239-6200
Cherry Jones, Ralph Fiennes and Ian McDiarmid; anyone of them on their own draws an audience but combine all of them on one stage and the result is a master class of fine dramatic acting. This Broadway production of Brian Friel's 20-year old play draws on each actor's incredible ability as a monologist to do justice to the writer's exemplary story telling style. The strength of each character is derived from the playwright's style and the actors' articulate delivery of the playwright's words. The play is a series of monologues through which we learn of a traveling faith healer's experience and the effects if his work on him and the people around him. The 2 1/2 hour play is not a fast moving, light hearted musical. It is an intense look at individual characters performed so...so well.

History Boys

The Broadhurst Theatre (212) 239-6200
Set in a British Prep school, The History Boys tells the story of a small group of male students their education, process of maturing and their relationship with their teacher. Every aspect of the play, writing, acting, directing and staging has been seamlessly interwoven to reach a flawless performance that is so rarely achieved on any stage. Each of the talented actors (representing the complete British cast) transcends their own self and embodies his/her character making the audience feel as though we are watching real people's lives evolve.

Awake and Sing

Belasco Theater (212) 239-6200
Awake and Sing an american classic by playwright Clifford Odets depicts the struggles of a Jewish immigrant family living in the Bronx that has fallen on hard times during the depression era. This Lincoln Center production is staged at The Belasco Theatre. Cast members include Mark Ruffalo, Lauren Ambrose and Ben Gazzara

Founded in 1948 by Tony Amato and his late wife, Sally, two Italian immigrants with a love for Opera, The Amato Opera is one of New York City's little known treasures. For over fifty years it has provided a serious performance stage for young aspiring singers, many of whom have gone on to successful careers as singers, conductors and directors at major opera houses around the world. The small stage is brought to life not only by the quality of the performers but by the stage sets created over the past twenty years by stage designer, Richard Cerullo and a phenomenal orchestra.
In 1948, without a permanent home Amato Opera set out to perform Rossini's Barber of Seville, which it staged in Our Lady of Pompeii Church. Through the years the company performed in several temporary spaces including school auditoriums, the YWCA and town hall. Today it resides at its four-story, permanent home on the corner of Bowery and Bleeker Streets.
The Amato Opera's typical season consists of five works performed over a season that begins in September and runs through June. Prices at this intimate setting average about $23.00. Today, in his eighties, Tony Amato still runs this production company, bringing quality full-length productions at great prices.

Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

Dada

June 18 - September 11, 2006
Dada on Film: June 24 - September 4, 2006
Dada was an artistic movement in which artists (mostly painters but also some writers and film makers) expressed their reaction to the events of World War I through an avant-garde style that showed a deliberate irreverence towards conventional art theories. The movement that began in Zurich spread to New York City, Berlin, Paris and other European cities. Notable artists representative of the Dada period include Man Ray, Andre Breton, Max Ernst and Raoul Hausmann.

This exhibit brings together nearly 400 works in various art media to examine the varying form of Dada art including Collages, film, painting, prints photographs and sculpture. In connection with this exhibit, MoMA has made available for viewing a series of films created by Dadaist film makers between the years 1921 and 1928. Drawn from the museum's own collection, these films represent the experimentation that was taking place in film making and the visually descriptive method of presenting scenes that characterized the artist's irreverent look at contemporary society.
