CIRQUE DU
SOLEIL
Is coming to New York City This Spring for 6 Weeks Only April 25 -
June 18, 2006
Cirque
du Soleil began in Montreal in the early eighties as a one time festival
intended to give members of a street performers' association an apportunity to gather,
share ideas and display their talents. The event was so successful that
Cirque du Soleil was formed. In exchange for animals and other features
found in more typical circuses, Cirque emphasizes spectacular special
effects, beautiful costumes and original music. By the mid-eighties,
following a successful show in California, Cirque embarked upon its first US
tour. By the early nineties permanent locations were established in Las
Vegas and Florida. Today, this circus travels throughout Europe and Asia
including, Japan. The original studio space in Montreal is still used for
training and for the development of new show concepts and costumes. Each show
is built upon a theme - generally evoking images of magic, dreams and
mysticism.
NYC + The Manhattan Club + Cirque du Soleil Spring is one of the most

Saturdays 12-noon - 9pm, Sundays 11am - 9pm
Columbus Avenue at 64th Street.
Drawing a crowd of
visitors totaling over 100,000, this is considered to be the best
crafts show in New York City. This biannual event takes place in the Josie
Robertson Plaza and extends back on either side of the Metropolitan Opera
house towards Damrosch Park and the Vivian Beaumont theater. It is a judged
event and participation is limited to 170 artisans who represent the best in
their medium. The array of color and artistic form plus the consistent
quality of the items makes this show a virtual outdoor museum of bohemian
folk art. Exhibited items include oil on canvas, watercolor, sculpture,
pottery, jewelry, carpentry and fashion.
