MUSEUMS

Egon Schiele: The Ronald Lauder and Serge Sabarsky Collections
Neue Gallerie

1048 Fifth Avenue (at 86th Street)
(212) 994-9493

This tour de Force exhibit, quite in keeping with the gallery's mission to showcase the best in German and Austrian art, introduces you to the bold and evocative art of Egon Schiele, a visionary Austrian artist who by age 28 had produced a wealth of art including portraits, self portraits allegorical compositions and landscapes. There is a dramatic quality that transcends each of the 150 works on display causing them to almost jump off the canvas rather than quietly draw the viewer in, as is customary with other artists. This ability to depict the inner soul of his subjects and evoke such an emotional interplay between viewer and art make Egon Schiele one of the greatest Austrian artists of the twentieth century. The influence of his mentor Gustav Klimt is clearly evident in some of the works on display. The intimate size of the Neue Gallerie make this exhibit quite manageable. Allow approximately one and a half to two hours to see the exhibit and plan for lunch or dinner in the museum's Austrian Cafe, Cafe Sabarsky. Reservations are recommended for dinner. To make dinner reservations call (212) 288-0665.

Today the fact that our world is constantly and rapidly changing is evident and a widely accepted fact. In earlier times, however, popular belief dictated that we lived in a static world where conditions remained constant - then came Charles Darwin. As a result of extensive exploration and observations, he determined that the world in which we live is in fact, affected by a slow but certain evolutionary process.

The life and discoveries of this naturalist whose theory of evolution
completely changed the way we view the world are the subject of this special exhibit. Included in the exhibit are live Galápagos tortoises, an iguana and horned frogs. Admission to this special exhibit includes general admission to the entire museum, plus the Rose Center for Space and Science.

To coincide with the Darwin exhibit the Imax theatre located inside the
museum is showing Galápagos, a large screen film that follows a marine biologist's expedition to the Galápagos islands. Witness the exotic creatures that inhabit these islands located on the equator, 600 miles west of Ecuador and made famous by Charles Darwin.

The film is shown daily at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m., and 4:30 p.m. Tickets can be reserved in advance by calling 212-769-5200, Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 6:00pm, and Saturday 10:00am - 5:00pm..

   SHOPPING
Abercrombie & Fitch
720 Fifth Avenue (at 56th Street)
212- 381-0110 for store hours

Just when it seemed as though every possible shopping venue already existed in midtown, New York City upped the anti by adding yet one more. If the holiday season hasn't exhausted your shopping energy, head straight to the new Abercrombie & Fitch department store just opened on Fifth Avenue at 56th Street. The dark interior design and loud music is proof that the store is aiming to attract a young audience. Nonetheless, it's worth the trip just for the sake of curiosity to see how this old-time New York retail landmark has been transformed to meet modern-day demands.

Abercrombie & Fitch dates back to the late 1800s and was founded by
outdoorsman, David Abercrombie. In 1913 it became the first store in New York to sell both men's and ladies' apparel under one roof. Marketing approaches espoused by Abercrombie's new partner, Ezra Fitch is credited for much of the store's growth in sales but also with the start of a perpetual transition from sporting giant to mainstream ready-to-wear. By 1917 the store outgrew its Fifth Avenue location and relocated to Madison Avenue and 45th Street where it stood for many years.

In the early twentieth century, at the height of its popularity, Abercrombie & Fitch was the world's largest sporting goods store; complete with a shooting range and golf school. Equipment for every type of outdoor adventure from African Safari to falconry could be found here. Celebrities who flocked to the store include Ernest Hemingway, Teddy Roosevelt, Amelia Earhart, The Duke of Windsor and Clark Gable.

Beyond its name, this latest iteration of Abercrombie & Fitch bares little resemblance to its predecessor. However, for those enamored with New York City history, it is interesting to see the cyclical events that keep everything changing while staying the same.
