For the last eight years the Graduate Center at the City University of New York has presented a well-rounded array of artistic and educational programs that are open to the public. You can enjoy complimentary performances by the Shanghai String Quartet or pianist, Ivan Moravec or one of the Author Series talks featuring writers like Raymond Murray. Many of the programs are offered for a nominal fee or are complimentary. All programs are held at the Graduate Center, CUNY, 365 Fifth Avenue (between 34th and 35th Street.) The following is a selection of the winter 2004 schedule and reservations are suggested. Music, Dance and Theatre      

January 13, 3:30pm – Schubert’s Winterreise (Winters Journey,) a lecture exploring Schubert’s great musical setting of profound poetry on the human condition. General admission tickets are $12.00. 

January 18, 4:00pm – Winterreisse: A Staged Performance of Schubert’s Greatest Song Cycle with narrator, Lynn Redgrave, bass-baritone, Terry Cook and pianist, Caroline Stoessinger. General admission tickets are free.

May 8, 7:30pm – Shanghai String Quartet performing Beethoven’s Quartet in B-flat, op. 18, no. 6; Grosse Fuge in B-flat Major, op. 133; Quartet in F Major, op. 135. General admission tickets are free.


February 3, 3:30pm – Moonlight Sonata: The Romantic Beethoven, a lecture on the timeless social and political implications of Beethoven’s only opera. Video examples of major scenes will illustrate the musical content. General admission tickets are $12.00.


February 5, 7:30pm – Immortal Beethoven: The Pianist featuring the incomparable pianist, Ivan Moravec. The program includes Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata; 32 Variations in C Minor and Schumann’s Kinderscenen. General admission tickets are free.


February 7, 7:30pm – Shanghai String Quartet performing Beethoven’s Quartet in E-flat Major, op. 74, Harp; Quartet in A Major, op. 18, no. 5; Quartet in E minor, op. 59, no. 2 Razumovsky. General admission tickets are free.


April 17, 7:30pm – Shanghai String Quartet performing Beethoven’s Quartet in B-flat Major, op. 130 ; Quartet in F Major, op. 59, no.1. General admission tickets are free.
Author Talks      

January 27, 7:00pm – Evidence from the Earth: Forensic Geology a talk with author Raymond Murray. Enjoy tales of the many cases Mr. Murray worked on including homicide and fraud. He will discuss the methods used to solve each case as well as insights from his current book. A book signing will follow the talk. General admission tickets are $15.00.

February 11, 7:00pm – Author Mary Occhino will discuss her current book, Within These Four Walls: Diary of a Psychic which is part autobiography, part collection of interesting anecdotes, and part guide to accessing one’s own intuitive abilities. In her talk she will reveal the joys, sorrows, and sometimes overwhelming responsibility of being able to reconnect people with friends, family and the loved ones they have lost. General admission tickets are free.
 
Lectures     

January 13 & 20 - The Financially Savvy Women hosted by Karen Altfest, Ph.D. Ms. Altfest will speak on financial planning and investment strategies for women today. She is a published writer as well as founder of L.J. Alffest & Company a financial planning company based in New York City. The following is a description of each of the two nights topics.

January 13, 7:00pm – What You Need to Know to Take Charge of Your Finances Now. It’s never too late-or too early-to learn to make your money work for you. This talk is for women of all ages who want to learn how to take charge of their finances. General admission tickets are $20.00.

January 20, 12:00pm – The steps to Achieving a Prosperous Retirement. Learn how careful financial planning, investments, and estate planning can help you achieve and enjoy a prosperous retirement.
