The Sweet Big Apple
From Endless Vacation Magazine November-December 2000 issue.
|
We have been members of RCI for 16 years and have had some magnificent
vacations that we would never have experienced had it not been for
our timeshare purchase. From the wonders of the White Mountains in New
Hampshire during October to the wilds of the Scottish Highlands and from
the east coast of Spain to the west coast of Mexico, we have loved it
all. But we have to admit that a week at the Manhattan Club in New York
City during the spring has been our all-time favorite.
Thank you, RCI. We are looking forward to many more splendid exchange vacations.

Urban
time-shares save money, get you
better accommodations

NEW
YORK -- For Barry and Rhoda Abrams, frequent visitors to New York, buying
an "urban" time-share turned out to be a better investment than staying
in hotels.
"In
a hotel, you never know the room you're getting," said Barry Abrams, a dentist
from Cherry Hill, N.J., a Philadelphia suburb. By staying at the Manhattan
Club in Midtown, "we know what we're getting," he said. He also figures
they save $2,200 annually by avoiding hotels for the 14 nights a year they
stay in the city. Time-shares
have sprung up in places such as New York, Boston and San Francisco to cater
to such travelers as the Abramses, who regularly visit a particular city
at least once a year. Time-share owners gain accommodations that are usually
roomier than hotel rooms and are able to swap their rights with other time-share
owners for vacations in locales around the world.
For
frequent visitors, time-shares can pay for themselves in about nine years
based on nightly average hotel rates in a large city.
By purchasing a time-share, owners buy the right to stay in a
furnished unit in a resort or condominium for a set period of time,
usually seven days a year. It can be the same week every year or can
vary, and it can sometimes be split into separate stays. Owners
generally pay an annual maintenance fee.
The
Manhattan Club, where the Abramses stay, was one of the first time-shares
in New York when it opened on West 56th Street near Carnegie Hall in August
1997. The property was developed by Ian Bruce Eichner, builder of City Spire,
a mixed-use tower in midtown Manhattan, among other properties.

Resort In the Spotlight
From The Timeshare Beat
The
"city that never sleeps" now offers you everything from the ethnic
flavors of Chinatown and Little Italy to the galleries of SoHo, the cafés of Greenwich
Village, the glitz of the Theater District, the shopping on Fifth Avenue
and the affluence of Park Lane and the Upper West Side.
You
can get anything you want, at just about any time of day or night, in New
York.
The
part of Manhattan where we'll be staying is called Midtown. Beginning at
34th Street with the Empire State Building, this is the New York that most
people think of when they hear the name New York. In fact, many people think
that this area IS New York. The landmarks here are American icons: Times
Square; Rockefeller Center; Carnegie Hall; the Museum of Modern Art; the
New York Public Library, with its pair of marble lions (Patience and Fortitude)
guarding its main entrance (at Bryant Park behind the Library, free movies
and music events are hosted during the summer). Also in Midtown are Radio
City Music Hall; Grand Central Station; St. Patrick's Cathedral; the Chrysler
Building, and the United Nations complex. The Macy's store here takes up
an entire city block and is the world's largest department store.
Want
to go mining for diamonds along 48th Street? Shopping on Fifth Avenue? Take
in the latest Broadway play? Go bird or people watching in Central Park?
Browse the art galleries along 57th Street? This is the place.
Central
Park, a short 3 blocks away from our resort, has been an attraction for
tourists and residents alike since its opening in 1858. The first landscaped
public park in the USA, the 843-acres have stately lawns, ponds, theaters,
observatories, a boathouse, jogging and horseback riding trails, beautiful
fountains, famous statues and playgrounds sprinkled throughout. From horse
and buggy rides and concerts at the bandshell, to boating on the lake, relaxing
with a book on the grass, riding the merry-go-round, or taking a romantic
stroll around the Bethesda Fountain, Central Park has something for everyone.
Our
resort is, of course, the RCI Gold Crown Manhattan Club. And what they have
to say about it is this: "New York City has always held a strong attraction
for the worldly business traveler and the adventuresome tourist eager to
devour its cornucopia of cultural delights. This has become increasingly
true in recent years. With a constant pulse that beats larger than life,
New York can offer more reasons to visit than perhaps any other city in
the world. This growing popularity of New York City as a travel destination
has created a dramatic shortage of conventional accommodations causing visitors
to look for alternatives.
The
introduction of The Manhattan Club in 1997 made expensive and hard-to-find
accommodations a thing of the past for many. Currently at 165 suites, and
with plans for further expansion, The Manhattan Club is the world's largest
urban timeshare property. Its spacious and masterfully designed suites feature
comfort, luxury and style. Its most compelling feature, however, may well
be its enviable midtown location. Positioned just across the way from famous
Carnegie Hall, three blocks from Central Park and within walking distance
of Rockefeller Center, Fifth Avenue, the Metropolitan Opera and the Broadway
theatre district, guests find all major New York attractions at their doorstep.
Although
the mention of timeshare may conjure visions of beach and ski resorts, the
fastest growing segment within the industry is urban timeshare. Yes, now
it's possible to actually own a piece of the "Big Apple". Each suite features
classic furnishings and accommodations for four, and includes a queen size
bed and comparable sofa bed, a kitchen, a marbled bath, hair dryer, iron
and ironing board. Daily housekeeping is included. Aside from the well appointed
suites, members enjoy a private 26th floor lounge serving daily breakfast
and evening cocktails, a well-equipped fitness center, a business center,
doormen, concierge and valet parking. A UK journalist writes "If you are
a frequent visitor to New York, this is a proposition worth considering.
A
major factor making The Manhattan Club desirable and unique is its concept
of flexible use. Unlike most timeshares, The Manhattan Club offers the option
of staying for a few days at a time and returning for additional stays within
the same year. Another huge plus is The Manhattan Club's association with
RCI (Resorts Condominium International). Its Gold Crown Resort status, a
designation reserved for only the most highly regarded properties affords
members ultimate trading power within this network of over 3,300 world-class
resorts."
And
since they said it so well, there is no reason to try to add anything to
it. If you've just gotta spend some time exploring this fabulous city (and
you know you do), The Manhattan Club is THE place to stay.
